Frequently Asked Questions Frequently Asked Questions

Question: Should I leave my cordless power drill battery on the charger while not in use

Answer: No ! Never leave any cordless power drill battery or any cordless power tool battery on the charger for extended periods of time. Although OEMs claim to have "smart" chargers, dont take the risk. After all they are in the business of selling cordless tool batteries and chargers. Leaving the drill battery on the charger in most cases can lead to early failure or shorten life, if not melt down.

Questions: Can I remove the internal sub c cells from the cordless power tool battery before I send it to Harts Batteries to save on shipping?

Answer: Please do not remove the cells from the cordless power tool battery packs. We need to copy the cell pattern to rebuild the pack. We do keep some patterns on hand but not all. In most cases it will not save you that much on shipping anyway.

Question: My cordless power drill battery has a melted or broken case part, does the rebuild service include fixing or replacement of such damage?

Answer: Unfortunately no. The rebuild service only includes the replacement of the internal cells and weld tabs. In most cases we can not even order case parts because they are proprietary part from the OEM. If you have a damaged battery part and need a replacement, please email us at info@hartsbatteries.com , we might be able to help.

Questiom: Do you service customers tool batteries outside of the US, if not then what states do you service?

Answer: We service the following states:
Alabama, Alaska ,Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska,
Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina,South Dakota,Tennessee,Texas,Utah,Vermont,Virginia,Washington,West Virginia,Wisconsin, and Wyoming, Just to name a few

Question: What Cordless power tool battery brands do you rebuild?

Answer: All Brands!

Question: Should I run my battery down all the way until completely dead before charging?

Answer: No. There is no need to do this, in fact this could cause the battery to go into a negative charge and or shorten the life of your pack.

Question: What does Harts Batteries do with all of the dead cells removed from the old drill batteries?

Answer: We send them to a national Recycling company. Harts Batteries helps the environment by not filling landfills with dead batteries !

Question: How long will my drill battery rebuilt by Harts Batteries last?

Answer: At least as long as when you bought it new. A cordless tool battery is only as good as its internal cells. In most low end brand batteries, they use lower capacity cells, 1700mah cells for example. Harts Batteries uses 2000mah cells. With more capacity, you wont need to recharge as often, so your Harts Batteries rebuild should last longer. Another thing to consider is with Harts Batteries , a human is involved with every weld. Each weld is inspected for quality assurance. Some OEMs use robotics and automated welders to build the packs.

Question: Will you tell me how to rebuild my own Cordless drill batteries or start a rebuilding business of my own? (yes some people actually ask this )

Answer: No

Question: How much will I be charged for return shipping on my Tool battery rebuild service?

Answer: Nothing, we provide free return ground shipping for all rebuilds.

Question: Do you really "revive" the batteries? what do you do, shock them or something? (yes this has been asked )

Answer: There is no secret to how we "revive" your cordless tool batteries. We replace all of the internal cells with Brand new high quality cells professionally welded with solid nickel tabs.

Question: I have had my battery for years and now it wont take a charge. What is wrong with my drill battery. I want to know.

Answer: Just like any man made thing. They wear out from use. We replace all of the cells inside your Cordless tool batteries with Fresh new industrial cells

Question: Chris. What made you start a business rebuilding dead Cordless Power tool batteries.

Answer: I use to install office furniture for a living and I used a cordless battery powered drill almost everyday. I was tiered of buying replacement batteries so often. The last one I bought only lasted a few months. There had to be a solution. When I went to the store to buy a replacement it cost more than the drill kit did. I was determined to do something. This was the driving force behind this whole website.

Question: I see you sell Rechargeable sub c industrial NiCad and NiMh batteries on your site. Can I rebuild my own Drill battery.

Answer: Yes you can. If you would like to save a few bucks and give it a go. You can buy the subc cells and solder/weld tabs you need to do so. It will take a lot longer and is a little risky when soldering the cells together.but it can be done. Just be careful not to put to much heat on the batteries. Heat is not good for rechargeable batteries.

Question: There is a specific rechargeable battery I am looking for. I dont see it on your site. Can you order it for me.

Answer:I would be happy to offer a quote for any special order cell or battery that is not found on our site. Just send us an email or call and I would be happy to help.

Question: My charger is broken. Can you fix it

Answer: Sorry we do not fix chargers drills or cordless tools. We only rebuild batteries.

Question: I know you provide free return shipping. How much will it cost me to ship my cordless tool batteries to you

Answer: It depends on how many tool batteries you are sending but you can always use a usps flat rate box which are currently $8.95

Question: So Cordless power tool batteries have individual industrial sub c batteries in them. How many are in an 18 volt dewalt battery?

Answer: Each individual subc cell has 1.2 volts of power. So divide 18 volts by 1.2 volt and your answer is 15 cells. So a 12 volt battery would have 10 1.2 volt cells and so on.

Question: Do you sell DeWalt Cordless Power tool battery chargres, such as the DeWalt 7.2v-18v Charger DW9116 ?

Answer: Yes Harts Batteries has the DeWalt 7.2v to 18v Charger DW9116 Cordless Power tool Battery charger in Stock. Please visit our Charger section.

Question: What does NiMh and NiCad mean?

Answer: NiMh is the abbreviated version of Nickel Metal Hydride and NiCad is Nickel cadmium. Both are different types of rechargeable batteries. Both have their strengths and weaknesses.

Question: What is the Difference between NiCad and NiMh

Answer: In General NiCad batteries have a longer cycle life than NiMh. But NiMh can have more Capacity. In other words you can charge and drain a NiCad battery more times than a NiMh battery but a NiMh battery could have more capacity or runtime. NiMh batteries in a given amount of time will require less cycles or charges because you will have longer runtime. So in the end it is a trade off. If you have fewer Batteries and dont want to carry more around in order to have more runtime then go with NiMh. If you have many batteries that you can keep charged and ready before the one you are using runs out then go NiCad.

Question: Do you sell Battery solder tabs or Battery weld tabs

Answer: Yes Harts Batteries stocks Battery weld and solder tabs. We sell them in flexible quantities for your convince .

Question: What are your Battery solder weld tabs made out of

Answer: Our battery tabs are made out of solid Nickel .

Question: What size are your battery solder tabs

Answer: Our battery tabs are 1.25 x .375 x .005 .

Question: Lithium ion Cordless Tools are the quote latest and greatest thing. Should I buy a Lithium Ion Cordless tool

Answer: I can not tell anyone what to do but if you want to pay a lot more for replacement batteries and do not plan on having them rebuilt then go with lithium. Lithium ion tool batteries use expensive and proprietary cells. That is why you will not find a rebuilder for the Lithium tool batteries. In general There is a trade off for capacity vs cycle life and you will need to replace them just as much as a NiCad or NiMh battery but when you do you will pay a premium .

Question: How many cordless power drill batteries do you provide rebuild services for

Answer: I have no idea. Too many to count. I have to stay busy rebuilding drill batteries and not spend time counting them.

Answer: I have no idea. Too many to count. I have to stay busy rebuilding drill batteries and not spend time counting them. :)

Question: The first cordless tool I bought was back in 1993 in Indianapolis Indiana. It was a 9.6 volt Makita. The old stick type. Those batteries lasted me several years. In fact they were still charging up and working great when I gave the whole kit to my dad. Then I bought a 12 volt Skill cordless drill kit. It had two batteries a charger and the old looking gray color cordless power drill. The first battery died on me and I was stuck with just one battery to work with. I install modular office furniture so this just would not do. One day I got lucky and found a skil battery and charger at work that someone left behind. It was taken to the lost and found and wasnt claimed with the however many month time. Its a good thing because my original drill battery charger went out on me. So after a few more months of daily use all of the skil drill batteries went dead or began to need charging ever 5 minutes. By this time it was 1997 and most of my co-workers were using Dewalt Cordless drills circular saws saws alls flashlights and other power tools. Everyone kept telling me. get a Dewalt get a dewalt. It was frustrating because just a few years before that they were all telling me to get Makita get Makita Then of course Get Skil etc. So I didnt listen to them this time and I went the cheaper route and got a 18 volt craftsman cordless drill kit on sale for 99bucks. Well it was a great idea for about 4 months and at that time i was only using it part time. So needless to say the craftsman drill batteries didnt last as long as I expected them to. So I have never bought DeWalt before but everyone tells me that they last about a year to a year in a half for the 18 volt dewalt XRP drill batteries. Now what I want to know if if you rebuild build my craftsman 18 volt cordless drill batteries will they last as long as the DeWalt XRP drill batteries that all of my friends have.

Yours truly Bill

Answer: Bill .Wow you are a talker OK Here is the deal. The drill batteries are only as good as the internal Industrial sub c Nicad batteries that are inside of each drill battery. We at Harts Batteries use 2000mah sub c Nickel cadmium rechargeable batteries. So you should get about the same runtime out of our 18 volt drill battery rebuild service as you would from a brand new 18 volt Dewalt XRP battery pack. Most of the Craftsman cordless drill batteries I rebuild originally have less than 2000mah nicad sub c batteries in them.

Question: Hey Mr Harts Batteries guy, what is your problem? Are you obsessed with cordless drill battery and rebuilding all types of cordless tool batteries? I want to know what would make a guy build a great big website all for rebuilding a freakin drill battery. Tell me tell me I want to know.

Answer: Look. I just love working with my hands and cordless tool and drill. I dont like it when people get a battery and it only lasts a few months or less than a year. Yes it happend to me and I did something about it. I started this website in hopes to ease other peoples battery woes. I am such a humanitarian I know.

Question: So mr Harts Batteries guy. What are some of your favorite cordless drill battery brands that you enjoy rebuilding the most. Is it DeWalt, or Milwaukee. Please tell me . I must know these types of battery releated things.

Answer: That is a very good drill battery and cordless tool battery related question. I need to put on my super cordless drill battery thinking cap for this one. I just do so many cordless drill battery rebuilds and I love them all but if I had to pick just a few I would say. DeWalt Milwaukee Craftsman and the el cheapo no name brands are my favorite drill batteries to rebuild.

Question: Hey Harts Batteries guy. How many Cordless tool battery. Excuse me I meant to say cordless drill batteries I think people use the word cordless drill battery more . so anyway. sorry I am rambling on. I think I have battery on the brain. Anyway. How many Cordless tool batteries do you think you rebuild a year.

Answer: I dont even want to know how many Cordless tool batteries and drill battery I rebuild a year. I think I would get upset and think I need a life or something so I try not to think about it. That is a whole lot of battery work I will tell ya. Anyway. I would say some where in the thousands of drill battery range. If you added up all of the volts and mah I think it would be like a bolt of lightening ir one great big king kong sized cordless drill battery maybe.

OK the battery questions and answers are getting a little silly. I think I will stop for a minute or two.

Question:Harts Batteries I have one of those old Dewalt 18v Drill batteries that are a little shorter than the DeWalt yellow top XRP 18v batteries. Can you rebuild these. It says that it is a 1.2Ah battery. Can you rebuild it with your 2.0Ah cells.

Answer:We get a lot of the older and shorter DeWalt 1.2Ah cordless Power tool batteries for rebuilding. They take a short format cell know as a 4/5 sub c cell. We use 1.3Ah 4/5 sub c cells for this type of drill battery. We can not use our 2000mah cells because they are bigger than the 4/5 sub-c batteries and wont fit in the pack.
